Who doesn’t want to be considered attractive? People find ways to make themselves more appealing to others by using the appropriate clothes, applying makeup, styling their hair, and more. However, these can often be ineffective since individuals have vastly different preferences.

Thankfully, there are now several studies that can help people in this department. Check out these 9 things that will make you unattractive in the eyes of other people.

1. Stress

According to a 2013 study, women who are often stressed out are unattractive to men. High levels of stress hormones known as cortisol can also cause infertility among women. Likewise, women also find men who are frequently stressed to be significantly less appealing than men who aren’t. So if you’re stressed, begin practicing some stress management techniques to reduce your stress levels and subsequently your cortisol levels.

2. Being abrasive or mean

Male for female, having a mean attitude is an absolute turn-off. A Chinese study claimed that those who were viewed as mean appeared less attractive. Of course, that’s pretty much common sense. However, studies have also shown that even if you aren’t necessarily “mean”, but people perceive you as brash and abrasive, it can often have a negative impact on your chances of attracting a mate.

3. Coming off as too self-important or happy (gender dependent)

Weird picture, I know. Never mind that. A 2011 study conducted with 1000 respondents reported that men found women who seemed to be self-important and prideful to be the least attractive and women who were happy to be the most attractive. On the contrary, the study showed that the majority of women found men who seemed overtly happy to be unattractive, yet they found proud, self-important men to be the most attractive. Go figure.
