It seems like environmental disasters are becoming more and more common. All around the world, we hear news of disasters like oil spills, chemical pollution, nuclear disaster, gas leaks, forest fires, accidental genocide of bees, fish, etc. and the list goes on.
Just recently, a very disturbing environmental disaster hit Russia. The once clear Daldykan River near the city of Norilsk suddenly turned red. This alarmed everyone in the area, especially the indigenous people living near the river. They’re putting the blame on a nearby nickel factory which has denied all accusations.

Indigenous people living near the river say this was caused by a nearby nickel plant, Norilsk Nickel.
Norilsk Nickel parent company has denied the accusations, saying the plant has no leakages.
Some believe improperly treated industrial waste from the nickel plant is causing this.

Hopefully, clean-up efforts will be made soon, and it will be determined whether or not the nickel plant is at the root of the problem. Regardless, it will no doubt take a long time before the river will return to its natural state, and who knows how far-reaching the effects of this will be.
