What scares you? Heights? Spiders? Lightning?

What about…clowns?

‘It’, the iconic movie that sparked everyone’s fear of the make-up wearing circus jesters, released on September 8. It set box office records on release day and is now the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever. It’s even beat out the Exorcist.

The movie, based on the 1986 novel by Stephen King and later adapted into a 1990 t.v. miniseries stars Pennywise the Dancing Clown. Every 27 years, the shape-shifting immortal appears in the form of a clown to feed on children. And if that wasn’t creepy enough, he uses a trademark red balloon to lure the children.

So how do you promote such a scary movie? One company knew exactly what to do. Residents of Sydney found red balloons tied to sewer grate throughout town. Spray painted alongside the grates were the words “It is closer than you think.” And as you’ll see below, we all would think the same thing– Nope.

People in Sydney woke up to red balloons tied throughout the city.

They floated above the sewer grates along the street.

Soon, they started to creep people out.

Photos started popping up all over social media

“It is closer than you think”

And of course, Stephen King had to be let in on the fun!

Safe to say, this promotion had people talking about the film.

Released just a few weeks ago, it’s already beaten the Exorcist for highest-grossing R-rated movie.
