Who doesn’t love sinking their teeth into a big, juicy hamburger? Even vegetarians and vegans have their own adaptation of burgers, because obviously no one would want to omit burgers entirely from their diet! They’re just too delicious.
But can you imagine biting into a burger with a patty made of rat meat? The chef at a restaurant in Moscow says that river rats are a delicacy, and they’re serving river rat burgers, river rat hot dogs, river rat wrapped in cabbage, and other river rat dishes. If that hasn’t killed your appetite for the entire rest of the day, read on for why they’re saying it’s the new thing to try.
These river rats are actually called coypu.
Originally, they’re from South Africa and they’re considered pests.
Takhir Kholikberdiev, the restaurant owner and chef, said that river rats are clean animals and are rich in omega-3 fatty acids.
He says many “doctors and dieticians recommend it.” It’s unclear whether he meant they recommend eating river rats or the more obvious omega-3 acids.
Krasnodar Bistro’s river rat burger actually looks quite tasty, and it’s priced fairly – $9 USD.
Did we mention the river rat hot dog? It actually looks quite good too.
Still, it’s difficult to get past the notion of…eating rat.
